Haerebo Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Central-Eastern Inner Mongolia. The type section is located the “Haerebo section” (E114°05′, N41°52′), near the Gongweizi village, about 4 km east of Huade County, central Nei Mongol. It is derived from the “Harr Obo Bed” named by Andersson (1923), and formally erected by Zheng et al. (1999).
Synonym: Harr Obo Fm
Lithology and Thickness
The Haerebo Fm is characterized by a set of brownish-red and brownish-yellow sandy mudstones and fine-to-coarse sandstones, rich in calcareous nodules. It contains abundant mammalian fossils. Its thickness is more than 3 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
No underlying rock unit could be seen in the type section. Regionally, the next older unit is the Erdengtu Fm.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Haerebo Fm disconformably contacts with the overlying Quaternary deposits.
Regional extent
The formation is restrictedly distributed to the surrounding area of Xigongweizi village, Huade County, central Nei Mongol.

Gao et al. (2014a) treated the “Ertemte Bed” (Erdengtu Fm) named by Andersson (1923) as a synonym of the Haerebo Fm. Due to the occurrence of some derived taxa, such as Rhagpodemus sp. and Trischizolagus mirificus, the Haerebo Fm (=Harr Obo Fm) Fauna is slightly younger than that of the Erdengtu Fm (=Ertemte Fm) Fauna, and is placed in Early Pliocene (Qiu and Qiu, 1995).
Age
Depositional setting
